Eleonore Graves Tripp Modern Languages Laboratory

Lab Information

Welcome

The Eleonore Graves Tripp Modern Languages Laboratory has supported language learning at the University of Miami since the 1950s. In the late 1980s, a gift from Mr. Norman Tripp in honor of Eleonore Graves Tripp funded a major upgrade, and the Lab was renamed in her honor. It has been continuously updated ever since to keep pace with new language-learning technology. In 2007, following the Department's renaming from Foreign Languages and Literatures to Modern Languages and Literatures, the Lab took its current name.

What We Offer

The Lab is located in the Merrick Building on the Coral Gables campus and operates two spaces:

Merrick 201 — Modern Languages Laboratory (open access)

Twenty Dell laptops, each running Office 365 with language proofing tools, Zoom, Audacity, and VLC Media Player. Students can spell-check and grammar-check work in all nine languages we support, join Virtual Immersion sessions with partner classes abroad, and record oral assignments.

Merrick 205 — Teaching Computer Lab (class reservations only)

Twenty-five Dell all-in-one workstations with the same core software, plus video/audio recording, a webcam for Zoom sessions, and an instructor workstation that can project digitized films to the room's large screen. MB 205 is reserved for scheduled classes only — it is not an open-access student lab.
