ABOUT

Learning foreign languages in-tandem has been used by many students and professionals, since it was developed in Europe in the seventies and eighties. Foreign language learning in-tandem is based on principles of peer collaboration, autonomy, and reciprocity in which two speakers of different languages collaborate to learn the language of each other. In the present era of globalization, the development of new ICTs – Information Communication Technologies - have eliminated trans-geographical and transnational borders, providing foreign language teachers and students with new opportunities for communication and contact between languages and cultures. When these principles of collaboration and reciprocity are used in a virtual environment through the use of videoconferencing applications, this context is called teletandem.

The objective of this international meeting is to offer a context for researchers who are currently developing studies on teletandem learning to share their ideas and research progress with other colleagues, particularly (but not exclusively) those who are working with the developments of technology and foreign language learning in-tandem.


 

TOPICS

Teletandem provides many positive aspects to the language learning experience. However, it also presents us with new challenges regarding international collaborations, the intercultural dimensions of this learning context, the transformation from face-to-face interactions to those mediated by technology in virtual environments. Paper submissions are welcomed in the following areas (but not exclusively) of foreign language learning in tandem:

  1. Face-to-face foreign language learning in-tandem
  2. Technology in foreign language learning in-tandem
  3. Teletandem: future challenges
  4. Foreign language acquisition and  learning in-tandem
  5. The cultural dimension of learning in-tandem: Intercultural discourse and communication, social, gender, racial and identity issues
  6. Research methodologies in tandem learning
  7. International and inter-institutional collaborations to develop foreign language learning in-tandem
  8. The role of mediation and mediators in (e)tandem

Getting to Campus from Metrorail:
Metrorail is an affordable choice for getting to and from the university. A one-way ticket costs $2.25. For more Metrorail information, go to https://www.miamidade.gov/transit/metrorail.asp.

Take the Metrorail Green or Orange Line to University Metrorail Station. Take the Stanford Shuttle to Stanford Drive; you will be dropped off in the center of campus.  Shuttles run every ten minutes, so give yourself time.

Parking on campus: 
Metered public parking may occasionally be found on Stanford Drive.  It is best to park at the Pavia & Merrick Garages (enter through Stanford Drive and ask directions to garage at the gatehouse).  The Pavia & Merrick Garages have a dedicated visitor parking area. Passes are available via cash and credit card (Visa & MasterCard). 24-hour parking is $8.00.

The Red Parking Lot (enter through Pasano Avenue) is also available for parking ONLY on Thursday, March 22 after 4:30PM.
